A SHORT ADVICE TO THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT ON THE FIGHT AGAINST BOKOHARAM... By Olarewaju Olaniyi Precious
While the Govt. is sustaining the Military Offensive against Boko Haram, i am urging them to work more on Intelligence gathering both locally and internationally. This is key to the success of the Military Operation in the war against terrorism in Nigeria. International collaboration will include:
1. Mapping of Boko-Haram Movement Patterns: So far, the Offensive of the Nigerian Military had been in some Forests and mapped areas in Northeast Nigeria which had been assumed to be the Operational base/Field of Boko Haram, i think the International Community can help also with the Satellite imaging of this zone, as such satellite images will provide more Information on the Operational Bases of Boko-Haram scattered around this Zone that also extends into some parts of Cameroon. This will give the Nigerian Military a greater precision and accuracy in the offensive against Boko Haram.
2. Sourcing more Information on the reported International sponsorship of Boko-Haram: It is no longer News that Boko-Haram is already affiliated to Al-Queda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) with headquarters in Algeria, i think we should also be dwelling more on the movement of Funds and Ammunitions between Agents of these two groups. This involve high level Intelligence gathering which Nigeria urgently needs to improve on and also collaborate with the International Community.
3. Niger and Cameroon should also be ready to do more on the fight against Terrorism. Today, it is still basically a Nigerian Problem, but who can say, if these group should gain a little more ground in Nigeria, they can decide to also launch their brutal Attacks in Cameroon and Niger. Hence, it is so imperative we initiate a joint Military Response and work together more on sharing Intelligence and mounting increase surveillance on our Borders.
Lastly, i think the Nigerian Military should be more responsive to Emergency calls, the Military continues to claim they are always on red-alert, i am not here to contest the state of their readiness for and response to attacks, but events in the last few months have shown our Military are not always there when the people cry for their Intervention. Boko haram comes into town and they carry out attacks lasting for 4-5hours and yet, the Military is no where to be found, the Military summarily shows up at the end of the day, after Boko-Haram would have finished their mission, just like the Nigerian Policemen that normally show up 2-3hours after Armed Robbers would have finished their operations and left...
I think our Military Formations in the Northeast should be restructured in such a way that the Military can always be deployed into any part of the North-East within 30minutes of a reported on-going attack. This involves a lot of Logistics and high-level preparedness but i am convinced it is not impossible.
Peace unto our Land
